How to Frame Part-Time Work on Your LinkedIn Profile

Working in hospitality, retail, or customer service is leadership and communication experience. Here is how to describe it so employers see the value.

5 min read

Working in a café, a shop, a bar, or a call centre while you study is not a lesser form of experience. It is communication, reliability, customer service, problem-solving under pressure, and — in many cases — leadership. The problem is not the experience. It is how it is described. Here is how to describe it so employers see the value.

The core insight

Recruiters know that retail and hospitality workers develop skills that many university leavers with impressive-sounding CVs simply do not have. The ability to handle a difficult customer conversation calmly, to work reliably across a team, to manage multiple tasks at once in a high-pressure environment — these are genuinely valued. The issue is that most students describe these jobs in a way that buries the value.

"Worked at Starbucks" is a missed opportunity. "Managed high-volume customer service in a fast-paced environment while training two new team members" is the same experience, described properly.

The rewriting framework

For any experience, ask: What did I do? How much/how many/how often? What was the result or impact? Did I have any responsibility for other people or for any process?

Before and after examples

Café worker

Before:

  • Making drinks and serving customers
  • Cleaning and maintaining the café

After:

  • Delivered consistent customer service during peak periods serving 200+ customers per shift in a high-volume café environment
  • Trained two new members of staff on product knowledge, service standards, and till procedures
  • Maintained food hygiene standards compliant with Level 2 Food Safety requirements

Retail

Before:

  • Serving customers on the shop floor
  • Handling the till

After:

  • Assisted 100+ customers per shift with product recommendations and queries, consistently receiving positive feedback on the store's internal review system
  • Managed cash handling and end-of-day till reconciliation with no discrepancies recorded across 14 months of employment
  • Coordinated with colleagues to maintain store presentation standards during high-footfall periods

Event staff

Before:

  • Working at events
  • Looking after guests

After:

  • Supported delivery of large-scale public events with attendance of 2,000–5,000 guests, coordinating guest services as part of a 20-person team
  • Managed access control and crowd flow at entry points, maintaining safety and positive guest experience simultaneously
  • Responded to guest queries and issues in real time, escalating where necessary and resolving the majority independently

Tutoring

Before:

  • Tutoring students in GCSE maths
  • Helping with homework

After:

  • Provided one-to-one tutoring in GCSE Mathematics and Statistics to four students, adapting teaching style to each student's learning needs
  • Two students improved by at least two grades over the course of the academic year
  • Designed lesson plans and tracked progress across sessions, communicating updates to parents monthly

💡 Add numbers wherever you can

Specific numbers make experience descriptions credible and memorable. How many customers per shift? How many months or years? How many people on the team? How many events? You do not need to be exact — 'approximately 200 customers per shift' is fine. Numbers are better than no numbers.

The same rewriting principles apply to any experience. For a formula and worked examples including placements, internships, and volunteering, read How to Write Experience Descriptions That Show Impact at /resources/experience-descriptions.
