The Student LinkedIn Headline Checklist
Your headline is the first thing employers see. This checklist tells you exactly what a strong student headline needs — and what to remove immediately.

Your LinkedIn headline is the most-read thing on your profile. It appears next to your name in search results, connection requests, comments, and messages. Most people will decide whether to click on your profile based on your headline alone. Here is a checklist for making it work.
The basics
- Your headline is under 220 characters — LinkedIn will cut it off after that in many views
- You have not left the default headline LinkedIn auto-generates (your job title or 'Student at [University]')
- Your headline would make sense to someone in your target industry who does not know you
- Your headline is specific enough to be interesting — it says something a hundred other students would not say
Content
- Your headline includes at least one keyword that recruiters in your sector would search for
- You have avoided vague phrases: 'passionate about', 'aspiring professional', 'hard-working', 'team player'
- Your headline communicates what you do or study AND what you are interested in or working towards
- If you are actively looking for a placement, internship, or graduate role, that is stated clearly
- Your headline does not use abbreviations that someone outside your university would not understand
Formula options
Try one of these proven structures:
- –[Degree] Student | [Specialism or Interest] | [Goal e.g. Seeking 2025 Placement]
- –[Current Role] at [Company] | [Degree] Student | [Area of Focus]
- –[What you do] — [What you are passionate about] — [What you are building towards]
- –[Degree + University] | [Key skill or achievement] | Open to [Opportunity type]
Weak vs strong examples
Weak headlines (avoid these):
- –Business Student at Bath Spa University
- –Aspiring Marketing Professional
- –Final Year Student | Passionate About Communication
- –Looking for Opportunities
Strong headlines (use these as inspiration):
- –Marketing Student | Social Media Strategy & Content Creation | Seeking 2025 Placement Year
- –Psychology Graduate | Research & Behavioural Insights | Open to Graduate Roles in UX or HR
- –Software Engineering Student at Bath Spa | Building Web Apps with React & Node.js | Available from June 2025
- –Hospitality Management Student | Events & Customer Experience | Currently on Placement at [Hotel Name]
💡 Test it from the outside
Log out of LinkedIn and search for your own name. Read your headline as if you have never heard of yourself. Does it tell you something specific and useful? Would you click on this profile? If not, rewrite it.
